Given where Thailand is located if you're travelling around South East Asia you may find yourself going thorugh a there a number of times. I did. Three times in fact, on one trip. The north and the south are very different from each other with the north being much more relaxed and what feels like a more authentic experience of Thailand and the south much more geared towards travelers and those on holiday with the focus being on partying and relaxing on beaches. I've seperated Bangkok out just becuase you may well decide to do a loop of the north of Thailand including it or the south rather than both, or even only pass through Bangkok on your way elsewhere so it's got its own section.
