The main area to stay and surf in Lombok is Kuta Lombok. It may be called “Kuta” but it’s nothing like the Kuta of Bali.
The area is super chilled out with empty dirt track roads everywhere.
Once in Kuta Lombok the main place to surf is Gerupuk. There are a few surf spots there, all of which you need to get a boat to. In average swell conditions, they should provide enough of a range to satisfy most levels of surfing, from beginner breaks to more advanced ones.
How Long to stay in Kuta Lombok
I went there to surf and spent 5 days as there are other surf breaks a short drive away from the center of Kuta Lombok too and it’s a lovely place to hang out. Unless you’re going there to see Mount Rinjani, the volcano most people trek up in Lombok, too it just depends on how long you want to surf there. If you’d like to trek Rinjani too, you’ll need to leave a couple of days extra for that.
Where to Stay in Kuta Lombok
I stayed in Qurnia's Homestay. It's super cheap, the owner (Qurnia) is lovely and the breakfast is delicious. I'd thoroughly recommend staying there.

Hey, welcome to my site
I'm Chantell. I quit my job to travel in 2014 and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I know first hand how hard it can be to get everything in place in order to be able to travel, to know what to pack and where to go, let alone how best to go about your travels once on the road. Here I share everything I've learnt so far so you don't have to learn through as much "trial and error" as I did.
I'd love to hear about your journey, share your travel moments with #TravelForYourLife on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
